Client Aspirations
While currently living in an old farmhouse, our Client wished for a replacement dwelling to accommodate the needs of a large family. This was to be a contemporary but robust house with concrete finish inside and out and minimal fixtures and fittings.
Challenges
Dwelling located in the centre of a working farm yard; concrete finishes required and how best to construct same; located at top of hill
Our Response
We designed a simple linear vernacular house which is sited to integrate with existing farm buildings. The materials are boardmark and smooth concrete walls, zinc clad roof and hardwood timber window frames. The elevated location of the site is fortunate to have long distance views in particular to Lough Foyle and the shore line of County Donegal beyond. Openings on the walls are thoughtfully located and proportioned with some large to present a panoramic of the landscape, whilst others frame the landscape. These openings also reflect the typology and style of the surrounding farm buildings. Accommodation includes: an open plan Living/Dining/Kitchen, Utility area, 3 no. bedrooms, bedroom/playroom and 2 bathrooms.
