Client Aspirations
Bespoke considered design solution for alterations and extension to existing house; modernize the existing kitchen with a focus of creating a family space with a strong connection to the outside; increase the natural light throughout the house; additional internal alterations to improve the circulation flow functionality of the home for a growing family
Challenges
Existing dwelling just off Cyprus Avenue in Ballyhackamore, East Belfast constructed circa 1900’s; required a sensitive and methodical design approach; reconfiguration of a historical home with cellular layout and small rooms to an open plan home; profusion of natural light and connection to outdoors important; overlooked by adjacent properties
Our Response
This beautifully designed extension to the kitchen creates a generous open plan living, dining and kitchen area to relieve the otherwise compartmental feel of the ground floor and provide a modern style to the function of the house. The addition of large portions of glazing creates a light-filled extension taking into consideration the orientation of the property. We designed the reconfiguration of floor space throughout the house to improve circulation, functionality, accommodate a growing family and introduce natural light. We relocated the family bathroom, created a bright home office space and introduced a utility and wc on ground floor. Further additions included sky lights on top floor stairwell and new access to the music room. We also designed a semi-covered courtyard area accessed from the garden, making it a perfect space for entertaining.
